Majoring In The Minors

After finishing up our majoring in the minors podcast series it got me thinking. People spend an inordinate amount of time and money chasing things to give them an edge in the weight room or the playing field. The supplement industry is a multi billion dollar industry and every day it seems a new product comes out intended to give you some sort of edge over your opponent.

Coaches spend hours reading and applying far fetched theories and training philosophy trying to find the “next big thing” or the “magic ingredient” to success.

You have people obsessing over all sorts of obscure things from how much added sugar they are consuming to the amount of plastic they come in contact with.

But he doesn’t quite agree with this.

“PREHAB” DRILLS AREN’T THE KEY TO REDUCING INJURY RISK IN TRAINING

No matter where you look, whether that’s in the gym or on social media, you are bound to see tons of people doing “prehab” type drills, which are usually low-load movements with an emphasis placed on stability, balance, using the “smaller stabilizer” muscles, and coordination

Examples of these prehab type drills include things like exercises on unstable surfaces, direct rotator cuff and glute med exercises, and Turkish get-ups. But the question is, do these types of drills ACTUALLY reduce our injury risk?

Do Your Accessories

It’s all fun and games when you do your main movements. They’re the ones that can be loaded a bit heavier, pushed a little harder, and are typically very gratifying. It feels like you worked hard. But, what happens next?

Uh oh, accessories. The things in your program that your coach puts in after the main movements that you don’t do. Or you do, but you load them light, rush through them, or you arent quite sure why they are there in the first place.

This is when you ask, “Why are these accessory movements programmed, also… what’s an accessory movement?”

I’m glad you asked. “Accessories” are the exercises in between or after your main movements that offer a bit of variation - whether its in the goal of the exercise, the plane of motion, the loading parameters, etc.
