Use Your Words

Last week I posted a video in the RTL Facebook group that got some attention, but I wanted to put the message in writing for those of you who need to print it out and put it on your fridge.

When you first start training, progress is immediate and consistent. Unfortunately, progress has to slow down at some point, because if it didn’t, we would all be lifting thousands of pounds. What got you bought into the idea of training can’t be the same thing that keeps you going, at least not all of the time. PRs become less predictable, require more and more time in between, and instead of feeling awesome all of the time you start to feel pretty run down. In spite of all this, you can’t quit, but you can modify.

As coaches, we’re here to help you navigate your training through whatever life has to throw at you. It’s not possible to always be making progress, so learning to deal with setbacks is part of what you signed up for. We can help reduce the likelihood, severity, and duration of these setbacks, but it’s not possible to prevent them altogether. By being open and honest with your coach about your struggles, the two of you can discuss potential solutions. Whether that’s adjusting your program, focusing on factors outside the gym, or working towards a shift in mindset, all of the above will greatly increase your chances of success when compared to going after it alone.

If you find yourself struggling in the gym for a prolonged period of time, please don’t internalize your struggle and try to figure it out alone. Set up a time to talk with your coach and discuss potential solutions. Sometimes the best way to make progress is to reduce the frequency and severity of setbacks.
