They talk about the pyramid of factors that are key to making progress which goes from consistency at the bottom, next is effort, and at the top is recovery. Without consistency, effort isn't important and recovery isn't needed. Focus on working from the bottom of the pyramid and work your way up. You will most likely find that when you focus on these big 3 factors, you will end up seeing progress in the gym.  They also discuss the importance of following a program rather than just making things up as you go. Too many people workout haphazardly and never see progress. Find yourself a coach that is going to help you train in a way you enjoy as well as create a program that will allow you to progress over time and help you to reach your goals.
